Do not buy a brand new set of golf clubs, yet

It is a good idea not to go out and buy a new set of golf clubs when you first take up the sport. Like anything one takes up that may have a chance of becoming a five minute wonder, it is a good idea to test the ground with the minimum of expense, in fact for free, if at all possible. The last thing you should do is go out and spend a silly amount of money on brand new equipment, only to give up and be left with another item taking up space in the loft, garage, or shed.

Beg, borrow, but don't steel !!

Before buying your first set of clubs, you should borrow or hire them, thus getting a feel of the different brands out there, as well as building up your skill and forming your own style of play. How you play will significantly influence the choice of clubs (brands, construction) that will suit you. Most golf clubs have the facility to hire out clubs and other golf equipment, in fact I myself have never come across a club that didn't, but you never know.

First set, should be a beginners set

Until you get to any decent degree of proficiency with the sport, the clubs you will use the most will be the number 3, 5, 7 and 9 irons, a 1, 5 or 7 club and of course a putter. With this in mind make sure the set of golf clubs you acquire (borrow/hire/buy) contains these clubs, then you will be ready to play.

Maxed to the 14

The maximum number of clubs a golfer is allowed to carry on a course is 14, but as a novice most of them would not be used, therefore stick with the ones mentioned above.

When length matters

When you select the golf clubs you will use, whether borrowed. Hired, or bought, you must check that they are the right length for you. Stance is critical, and you should be sure to get help if you are not confident about how to check this.

This is the game for me

Once you have been playing for a good while and have an idea of what you want from your clubs, then that is the time to get a brand new set that suits you and your style of play. This is the time to head to a decent shop. Your golfing colleagues or the people at your regular golfing haunt will be your best bet for advice on where to go.

The role of golf shaft fitting has always been a profound one. The golf shaft and club head are in need of constant communication and feedback for the relationship to flourish. When communication breaks down, intervention is needed. The professional tandem of the club fitter and Launch Monitor is there to "listen," measure, analyze and diagnose. To intervene and help mend those differences that have built over the golf seasons.

Jesting aside, we all know the holy grail to bombing those Saturday morning drives is a perfectly aligned club head and shaft to the swing. My goal today is to provide a general and simple guideline that will allow you to "eyeball" shafts by category, based on your swing profile. If you do decide to "go it alone" or bypass the help of your local club fitter and Launch Monitor, you will need a solid system to make educated decisions.

Introducing the Shaft Profile System (SPS).

But first, let's get a disclaimer out of the way. Nothing replaces the benefits you'll receive from getting fitted with a Launch Monitor. This undoubtedly is the best and most accurate way of getting fitted today.

OK, now on with a high level definition of the system.

There are three variables used in the Shaft Profile System, Trajectory, Torque, and Weight. Since shaft flex is an option within every conceivable shaft selection, we dismissed this as a criteria. We are focusing on the true variables that occur within shaft models in an attempt to predispose you to a selection of shafts that might suit your game.

Below, are the variables and short definitions used in the Shaft Profile System:

Trajectory is defined as the ability to promote the ball airborne. This is influenced by many things but mainly the Bend Point and Tip Flexibility of the shaft. The higher the Bend, the lower the trajectory.

Torque is defined as the amount or measurement of rotational twisting that occurs at the tip of the shaft. The lower the Torque, the less twisting occurs.

Weight is measured by the raw, uncut shaft. Very important and significantly undervalued performance indicator of the shaft. The weight is a very big contributor of control and distance.

There you have it, three variables we will use to align shafts to a player. We will be matching shaft profiles with the player skill level, swing speed, and swing tempo to come up with "suggested" shafts that fit your game.

Golf shaft fitting is a part scientific, part subjective with a dash of intuitiveness. Using the Shaft Profile System will allow us to make very educated golf shaft decisions based on the player swing and profile. When playing golf games, the golf club and the golf club's length becomes an extension of your body. There has to be a good fit between you and your golf club. One particular dimension that determines fit is golf club length and it has been established that a good percentage of errant shots is attributed to poor fit. By custom fitting your set of golf clubs, you can reduce the chances of misses, slices, hooks and other disasters.

The average set of clubs that come out of the box is fitted to a male person with a height of 5'10". Some players find it okay to use this standard length. However, some players who find the length too long will ground the club too early during the downward stroke. Taller players will top the ball and embarrassingly miss it. Although the law of physics will tell you that longer shafts makes you drive the ball further, the corresponding loss of control will really penalize your game.

Most professional golf shops will gladly measure you and suggest proper lengths. You are not obliged to buy equipment from them. It is also possible to do online custom fitting. The most common metrics used to determine proper length is your height and the distance between your wrist and the floor. These two factors are taken together because proper fit is a function of height and the length of your arms.

The only time when a longer golf club length is valuable is during longest drive competitions when distance matters more than control.
